5 Tips for healthy Eyes
1. Eat healthily!
Like other organs, eyes also need daily nutrition through proper diet. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A and C and zinc improve eye health. Foods such as fish, broccoli, carrots, lemons, spinach, greens, nuts and citrus fruits are rich in essential nutrients and keep your eye health in check.
2. Take frequent breaks from the computer screen
Most digital device users experience eye discomfort due to Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). CVS is characterized by eye pressure, dryness and fatigue.
Hence, it is very important to take short breaks from the screen about every 20 minutes, as it helps in relieving the strain. Hydrating your eyes using eye drops, being consistent with some basic eye-strengthening exercises, and using blue-light glasses can also help reduce eye strain.
5. Quit smoking
Smoking can cause many complications. One of which is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD affects the retina and destroys central vision. Regular smoking increases the risk of developing cataracts and glaucoma. Therefore, giving it up on time can be happy not only for your lungs but also for your eyes.
4. Go for regular checkups
According to The Economic Times, 550 million Indians are in dire need of vision correction. But only 1 in 5 people go for an eye exam. Even without complaining of any eye problems, regular checkups with an ophthalmologist ensure healthy vision and detect eye diseases before they progress beyond easy treatment.
5. Wear sunglasses
Apart from the fashion element of wearing sunglasses, they also help protect your eyes from the sun's harmful UV light. UV light increases the risk of premature eye aging, macular degeneration and cataracts. Wearing sunglasses, especially when exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time, can drastically reduce the chances of developing this disease.
Apart from the above precautions, getting enough sleep, maintaining a moderate fitness regime and adjusting light levels are also important considerations.
Since unhealthy lifestyle factors are beyond our control, eye care should be as much a priority as the rest of your health. Following these simple tips will help keep your eyes safe and healthy.
